Reading - Week 8

 Hi guys today and yesterday we read a article called "Where does democracy come from" after we read that article we read another one about one out of the two people that we could read about which was Kamala Harris and Jacinda Arden. I chose to read about Kamala Harris. After you read that you would do a DLO on the person you read about. After that or before that you had a sheet to do. Here is my work and I hope you enjoy.

1. In your own words, explain what the word Democracy means and the historical context. 

   The word democracy means the Power Of people, there is two words that were combined together to make the word democracy the two words are Demon and Kratos which are from greek. 2.Paragraph 7 explains the way the Pakeha government was first established in New Zealand. What are they referencing here and how do you know? 

   They are referencing the Treaty of Waitangi. They are referencing in the paragraph and it says that “A Governor (who represented a queen) ruled the country. But the settlers also thought this was unfair and wanted more influence.”  3.New Zealand has a democratic government which means the leaders are elected by the people through a vote every three years by citizens over the age of 18. Do you think this is fair? How else do you think we could decide on our political leaders? 

   In my opinion this is kind of fair but maybe the age should be lowered a bit but 18

   sounds right. Maybe they should let other people who move to New Zealand be able to vote instead of just people who are born in New Zealand.

Suffrage Paragraph

Hi guys today in reading my group has read the book The Fight to Vote, The Fight to Vote is a book about the Suffrage movement. Which is about the rights for women to vote. For the task we have to write a explanation paragraph about the movement. Here is my paragraph  and I hope you all enjoy.
 

The Woman's Suffrage Movement was about woman gaining the right to vote. Woman's Suffrage has happened for a long time I'm pretty sure it happens to some woman today. New Zealand was the first ever country to allow woman to vote, following after woman in different countries gained the right to vote. Some men had also shared the same option that woman should be able to vote. 
Kate Sheppard was one of the main people doing this, Kate Sheppard was the founding owner of WCTU. There was a petition that could be signed to ask woman to vote, Around 30,000 women signed the petition which was around quarter of the of the adult female population. When all of it was glued together the petition was 270 meters long.

Skittles

Chromotography is a technique for the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates.

Aim: To separate the colours from the skittles by using chromatography.

Materials;

1. Skittles

2. Petri dish

3. Water

Method:

Step 1: Place skittles around the edge of the pertri dish 

Step 2: Carefully put water into the middle of the dish.

Step 3: Watch to see which colours reach the middle first.

Findings:

Explain what happens to the colours? - The colours are starting to come out of the skittles.

Why do they bleed out at the same rate? - 

Why do the colours not mix together? - The colours dont mix together because each food colouring has the same amount of sugar.

Green - 4

Orange - 4 
Brown - 8 
Red - 3 

Conclusion:

In conclusion brown had reached the middle the most 

100 word challenge

 Hi guys today in wananga we did the 100 word challenge. The picture for the challenge was a leprechaun laying down on a hay bale. Here is the picture and my writing I hope you enjoy.

I was resting on the hay bale nearly falling asleep in the process.

I was surrounded in heaps of plants, mostly green no other colour why?

Because I'm a leprechaun. I was pretty tired from doing things this morning.

I looked behind me to see a white wall with vines hanging and sticking onto the walls.

There was a nice small window dab in the middle of the wall.

I jumped off the hay and made my way to the window to look through and see what was inside. I looked in and saw the whole room had rainbow walls.

Rainbow Paper

Aim: To separate colours by using the process of chromatography.

Definition: Chromatography is a method of separating out materials from a mixture using a liquid.

Materials;

1. Chromatography paper

2. Water

3. Test Tube

4. Felt Pens

5. Test Tube Rack

Process:

Step 1: Get the paper

Step 2:  Get your felt pens

Step 3: Get test tube 

Step 4: Put water in the test tube.

Step 5: Put a dot on the paper

Step 6: Put paper in water

Conclusion:

What colours changed the most? Blue 

How many new colours could you see? none

Which colour travelled the furthest? Pink and Blue

Children's war Task

 Hi, guys a few weeks ago we read a book named Children's War, and then we did the task.

An interesting fact that from the book was that the kids raised $18,300 which is actually around $2 million dollars today), also they made this money by collecting gas bottles because they were worth lots because they were short on supplies.

I learned that boys who were age 14 would do compulsory military training.

My opinion on the topic is that it’s pretty boring to read, there also weren't really any issues in the book where I could give my opinion on it.

Weekly Reflection

Hi guys today in Wananga we are doing a weekly reflection about what happening so far this week. Here it is and I hope you enjoy.

This week I am proud of doing the work that I was told to do.
I struggled this week when trying to think of ideas for my writing assessment
Something that I enjoyed this week was laughing with my friends.
Next week I want to try and finish a painting I was starting.

Hands on Fire

Hands on Fire

Aim : To light your hands on fire safely 

Safety : Wear glasses, have your hair tied up, take watches and bracelets off, jackets off, and know where the fire extinguisher is.

Method :
1. Collect your equipment 
2. Put some water in the tray 
3. Put some detergent
4. Put on your safety glasses 

5. Tie back your hair 

6. Take off any jewellery 
7. Wash water on your arms up to your elbows
8.  Make bubbles in the water using the gas tap 
9. Lock your elbows 
10. Hold your hands together and scoop the bubbles   

The States of Matter

The States of Matter 

Aim : To change the states of water from solid to liquid to gas.

Hypothesis: I think that the ice will change to water in the fastest time. 

Equipment:

1. Beaker

2. Ice

3. Thermometer

4. Electric element 

Method 
1. Ice was placed in the beaker 
2. Putting the equipment on the desks
3. The water from the ice is heated on the element
4. Measure the temperature of the boiling water

Findings
1. Ice to water took 13 minutes 
2. For the water to boil it took 4 minutes

100 Word Challenge

 Last week on Thursday we did a 100 word challenge. The picture we were given was a mouse in a mug and a cat behind it. Here is what the photo looks like.
Here is the writing that I did. I hope you enjoy.

I ran up and went into the closest hiding spot possible. The closest hiding spot was inside of a small turquoise mug. It wasn't an ideal hiding spot but it worked out. I was running away because I had just stolen a piece of food off of someone. I'm pretty sure it was some chips that had just a flavour of cheese. I was running away because the human who lived here had a cat. The cat was trying to find me because it could sense me. The cat started to play around with the mug that I was in.
